Why Are We So Reluctant To Change
It seems that we take our time to evolve due to our reluctance to change. Life could be so different if we opened ourselves to new opportunities and ways of thinking or being.
I laugh at the posts on Facebook and other sites telling us that the minority are controlling the majority and how we are letting the few dictate to us; and how many ‘likes’ they receive. Why would you like something like that, why not do something about it? If we all decided that we had had enough of life the way it is, we could change it.
Fear seems to be a big factor in our reluctance to change, questions of what if this or what it that crowd our minds and we can be paralysed with fear or uncertainty so we do nothing. I love this quote from Marianne Williamson from her book Return To Love:
“Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous? Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God. Your playing small does not serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won’t feel insecure around you. We are all meant to shine, as children do. We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us. It’s not just in some of us; it’s in everyone. And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.”
What a powerful message; its like a clarion call. Why do we keep ourselves in fear? Why do we not be the best we can be? When anyone dares to stand out above the rest and to declare who and what they are, the rest of society condemns them or is afraid of them somehow. Why? Because everyone else wishes they could do the same but don’t for fear of ridicule.
Is that all we are doing with our lives; conforming to someone else idea of how we should be? We are all unique and individual in our expression. When we don’t share our gifts with the people around us, we deny them the opportunity to really know who we are and what we stand for.
